Overview

Chris Buck's sculptures are inspired by the work of prominent 20th century St Ives artists such as Dame Barbara Hepworth and Denis Mitchell. His studio, in a converted Cornish byre, overlooks fields and hedgerows, where the shapes of nature serve as the starting point of each of his elegantly abstract works.

As a maker, spontaneity and creative freedom drive his practice, which responds to the subtle details of the visual world and transforms them into refined and enduring sculptural forms in wood, stone and sandcast bronze. The son of a toolmaker, Chris Buck studied at Redruth School of Art. He has worked in several foundries, which has given him a thorough knowledge of casting techniques. He has received awards from the Morris Singer Founders Prize, the RWA Autumn Exhibition, and is a member and former chairman of the Penwith Society of Arts.
