Caroline’s latest collection of focuses on the harbour as a metaphor for refuge, healing, and return. Inspired by John Ruskin’s The Harbours of England, these monotypes explore these special places as havens from the perilous, unpredictable storms of life, with particular reference to her home of Port Isaac, a place she loves returning to after her travels.
Within the protective embrace of Port Isaac’s imposing breakwaters, she details boats and tangled ropes beneath wheeling seagulls, alongside the cobblestone alleys, ancient lime-washed cottages and historic stone quay, which has endured a century of ocean weather.

Caroline Cleave works from her valley studio in the heart of Port Isaac. Her family have lived in the village for four centuries, and her husband and sons are working fishermen. Caroline’s life in this beautiful North Cornwall harbour give her an intimacy with nature and an economy sustained by the coast that is reflected in her paintings and handmade prints, which explore issues of sustainability associated with those living and working in rural Cornwall.
