Drawing is central to Sally Spens's work as a textile designer and printmaker. She uses intaglio printing techniques on copper plate, which allows for huge variations of detail and expression. In her etchings of Imagined Pots, she combines drawings, memories with still life interpretations of elegant ceramic vessels. Her work with a Japanese textile company, on designs for summer kimonos, is also a major influence, particularly in her botanical works which bring Eastern crafted sensibilities to her handmade prints and recall the subtleties and richness of her textile designs.
Sally studied Textiles and Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London, and went on to work as a textile designer in London, New York and Japan. Since 1989 her work at design partnership Bentley & Spens has been archived by the Victoria & Albert Museum, and her etchings have been exhibited at Aqua Art Miami, Florida; The Crypt Gallery, St. Ives; the Affordable Art Fair, Milan and The Royal Geographical Society, London. In 2018 and 2022 she undertook art residencies at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, and in 2022 she was invited to exhibit at the Venice Art Biennale. Her work is held in the Public Collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Changsha University, Hunan province, China. She lives and works in Cornwall.
‘Drawing has always been central to my work, both as a textile designer and as a painter/printmaker. It is important to me that the images are handmade, and originate from my drawings and experience. In the ‘Etchings of Imagined Pots’, images drawn from memory and observation are combined with that of vessels, linking associations with both. Working with a Japanese company for seven years on designs for summer kimonos has also been a major influence, particularly in the compositional botanical works. I feel privileged to have had that contact with the culture of Japan and try to bring those crafted sensibilities to my work as a printmaker. The making of etchings, intaglio onto copper plate, allows for infinite variations of expression and the transformation of images.’
