As the days shorten and the year draws to a close, we present this new collection by Featured Artist Elaine Turnbull. Elaine paints in the historically important style of naïve Cornish art, bringing personality and playfulness to scenes of windswept dog walkers, coastal cottages and crashing winter waves. With a focus on drawing in oil and acrylic, her works convey the lively essence of her subject, and that familiar balance of wild beauty and brutal weather that defines winter on the Cornish coast.
Elaine's artworks begin with observational drawings, captured out in the Cornish landscape, as a starting point for spontaneous and experimental painting back in the studio. She studied Art and Textile design at Newcastle and Edinburgh College of Art, and is a member of the St Ives Society of Artists, and an Associate member of the Penwith Society. Her work has been selected for the Royal West of England Academy, and in 2017 she was a prize winner in the National Open Art Competition.
