Overview

Sam Brooks' landscape and still life paintings are influenced by 20th century European Modernism in their exploration of colour, form, and spontaneous abstraction. Drawing on time spent as a student painting frescoes in Italy, she works with pure pigments that give a radiance and velvety depth to her paintings, applied freely with sweeping brushstrokes in delicate veils of modulated colour.

Sam sources many of these natural pigments around the South Devon coastline and Avon Estuary, where she lives and works, before preparing them by hand back at her studio. On canvas, she follows the materiality of the paint until the sense of an image settles, finding subtle motifs within beneath the translucent layers of colour. Sam Brooks was awarded a First-Class honours degree in Fine Art from Exeter College of Art. She continues to study under Robin Child, whose own professor was a pupil of Walter Sickert, who was himself taught by Whistler and Degas.
