Overview
Esther Smith

Esther Smith takes inspiration from Cornwall's beautiful natural surroundings and its coastal communities and creatures. Using copper, silver, brass, wood, enamel and tin, she handcrafts each design using recycled materials wherever possible. She treats her metals with patination and oxidisation techniques to achieve a distinctive palette of turquoises, rich browns, reds and blacks, with the addition of metal leaf and varnishes to add lustre.

Esther was raised on the north coast of Scotland, and its people and landscape continue to influence on her work, alongside the inspiration she draws from her love of Cornwall. She trained in jewellery and silversmithing at Birmingham's School of Jewellery, taking the creative leap into to automata in 2014, inspired by the history of automata in Falmouth, where she lives and works.
