Simon Hawkes
Simon Hawkes uses the critically endangered heritage craft of ‘raising’, an ancient metalsmithing technique in which a flat piece of copper sheet is hammered over a steel stake and gradually formed into a vessel. He then patinates the surface in a variety of beautiful coastal colours, before scraping the colour back to reveal the copper and to highlight the textures created by his hammer.
Simon draws much of his inspiration from a love of the landscape. His recent Coastal Cave collection is inspired by the form, colour and texture of a hidden cave on the South West coastal path near Clevedon, while his luxurious Seagrass vessels were conceived in response to a ‘carbon capture’ replanting project on seabed areas in North Wales, The Solent and Isle of Wight, and The Firth of Forth in Scotland. Simon’s work has been exhibited at The Royal Academy in London, The Royal West of England Academy, and The Royal Cambrian Academy.
