This year marks potter Hugh West’s 50th year in ceramics, and Whitewater Contemporary are proud to host his anniversary exhibition, Ethereal, throughout September.
Hugh studied at Hereford School of Art & Design aged seventeen, later studying ceramics at Redruth School of Art, where Mary Rich and Roger Veal were his tutors, and Bernard Leach, Janet Leach and Michael Cardew were visiting lecturers. During his career he has established studios in Cornwall, Devon, and La Borne in France.
This new collection of Hugh’s finely structured, beautifully finished porcelain works celebrates his long and prolific career and is comprised simply of “pots that have pleased me the most within this 50th year of creativity”, glazed using recipes that have taken Hugh’s lifetime to perfect, “a myriad of them, equivalent to an artist’s palette, giving me endless choice when one of my beautiful forms is ready to be glazed”.
Hugh is a member of Cornwall Crafts Associations, the West Country Potters Association and the Penwith Society of Arts. He has held numerous solo exhibitions in the UK, and has exhibited in group shows in Europe, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and the United States.
